New investigation team formed by Sindh IGP to take formal proceedings into Mir Raza Ali murder.

On Monday, the Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) formed a new investigation team and began formal proceedings into the murder of Mir Raza Ali, the owner of the Wafflix eatery. The new team was created after a second post‑mortem examination ruled out suicide. The forensic report found a gunshot wound to Ali’s back and other injuries that indicated a homicide. Ali’s family met the new investigators at the DIG Crime office. They expressed confidence in the newly formed police unit and requested that the case be handled thoroughly and transparently. DIG Crime and Investigation Amir Farooqi said she heard the family and their lawyer, Jibran Nasir, explain the circumstances surrounding the murder. He added that the team has taken the previous team’s records for detailed review. Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar announced that the government had deferred a decision to set up a judicial commission for the case. He said the family’s confidence in the new police team is a factor in this deferment. The mayor of Karachi and a PPP leader visited Ali’s home and assured the family of justice. Neither the mayor, the minister, nor the mayor’s communications mentioned the creation of a commission. Karachi Police Chief Azad Khan suspended Sub‑Divisional Police Officer Muhammad Arshad Afridi and Station House Officer Kamran Qureshi for allegedly failing to preserve the crime scene. He ordered the case file to be transferred to Zaman Town Police Station. Earlier, controversy had erupted over the first post‑mortem report. A medical board was set up to exhumate Ali’s body, but the board was reconstituted twice before the second post‑mortem was carried out. The new findings confirmed multiple injuries and a gunshot fatal wound. The family maintains that Ali was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered, while police initially considered the possibility of suicide before the second autopsy clarified the facts.
