Pakistan's defense minister reports United States and Iran are close to an arrangement on the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told Bloomberg that Washington and Tehran are close to a deal over the Strait of Hormuz. Asif said the signals over the last two or three days point to an arrangement that favours a peace settlement. He added that a “deal” is shaping up again in the area. In the same week, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran as part of Islamabad’s push to resolve the Hormuz standoff. The two officials discussed diplomatic and bilateral issues, though no details were released. A Pakistani government source told Anadolu that Naqvi would share new proposals with the Iranian leadership, but the content of those proposals remains undisclosed. The United States and Iran had signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 and began negotiations toward a final agreement. The talks stalled over disagreements on security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the strategically important waterway. Between July 8 and 24, the US and Iran exchanged military strikes; Washington attacked Iranian targets, and Iran struck facilities described as US military installations in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Separately, a Qatari foreign‑ministry spokesperson reported that negotiations between Iran and Oman about reopening the Strait have reached an advanced stage.
