Police Martyrs Day Highlights Rising Deaths: 112 Law Enforcers Killed in July, 195% Increase from June.

On August 4, President Asif Ali Zardari spoke at Police Martyrs Day and called police the “vital pillar of our social fabric” and praised their “ultimate sacrifice.” Prime Minister Imran Khan also honored police officers who died in duty, noting the force’s “exceptional professionalism and unflinching resolve” in fighting terrorism and crime. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies released data for the first seven months of 2026, showing 2,786 deaths linked to terrorist violence and counter‑terrorism operations. Of those, 434 security‑force personnel died, including 152 police officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and 89 in Balochistan. In July alone, 112 security officials were killed, compared with 38 in June, a 195 percent increase. At least eight suicide attacks occurred that month, the highest single‑month total in a decade. The deadly bombing near a police station in Swat killed 17 people. Following Police Martyrs Day, a forum of serving and retired police officers convened to discuss vulnerabilities in KP and Balochistan and how the state should respond. Participants highlighted gaps in intelligence coordination, protection of police facilities, and community policing. They noted that KP and Balochistan face intense militant activity, shortages of resources, and challenges in infrastructure and training. Recommendations made in the forum included: strengthening intelligence‑led policing, modernising protection and training for officers, and expanding community‑based policing to build trust and improve reporting of suspicious activity.
