Rubble from Pakistan Railways demolition keeps Dhoke Ratta Road blocked, threatening traffic and public health.

Almost three months after Pakistan Railways demolished encroachments on its land along Dhoke Ratta Road, the rubble has not been cleared. The debris occupies nearly half the road’s width, blocking traffic and creating daily congestion. The demolition used heavy machinery to tear down more than eight houses and over a dozen shops built on railway property, following court orders. The operation displaced families and affected the livelihoods of local traders. Residents report that the uncovered rubble has caused significant traffic jams and increased the risk of accidents, especially at night. Monsoon rains have left stagnant water in the debris piles, providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes and insects, and heightening public health risks. Local residents say the site has become an illegal dumping zone. Trucks unload construction waste and household refuse there after dark, worsening pollution and producing a persistent foul odor in the surrounding area. The residents have repeatedly appealed to the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation and Pakistan Railways for removal of the debris. They claim that each agency has transferred responsibility to another, with the waste companies stating that the matter belongs to Pakistan Railways. When contacted, officials from Pakistan Railways, the waste company and the municipal corporation have not issued a response.
