Karachi is not full of wide parks or quiet beaches. Instead, most streets lead to a dining table. Restaurants become living rooms and home gatherings are common. Corporate communicator Shaha Tariq says the city’s social calendar is measured, not wild. She notes that corporate dinners, charity galas, book launches and awards nights involve people who know or act as though they know one another. A clear rule is to confirm the invitation. If you accept, do so only when you truly have the time and energy to attend. Always let the host know your plan. Punctuality matters. Arriving about half an hour after the invited time gives hosts time to finish preparations. Guests should arrive with a modest gift, such as dates, chocolate or a small dessert. The gift must not create extra work for the host. Adding a plus‑one is only accepted if the host agrees. Inform the host in advance. During the meal, relate to different guests, avoid sensitive questions and listen more than you speak. If help is needed, volunteer to clear plates or refill glasses, but respect the host’s wishes if they decline. Sirajuddin Aziz recommends a basic rule: eat from the left, drink from the right, and use the napkin on the left. Good guests leave early if the host starts yawning and thank the host with a brief, genuine message.
